He graduated in Visual Arts at the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent and has been a resident artist at the Masereelcentrum in Kasterlee (2016) and the Workspacebrussels in Brussels (2015). Central to his artistic research are his reflections on exhibition spaces and the transformation of architectural elements into sculptures and installations.
His most recent solo and group exhibitions include: You make a better door than you do a window, with Emi Kodama, Beursschouwburg, Brussels (2016); Politics of Installation, with Bas van den Hurk, P/////AKT, Amsterdam (2015); Be ALL AND END ALL, with Herman Van Ingelgem and Marc Nagtzaam, Millington Marriott, London (2015); Some Objects, Eight Sculptures, Several Frames. One Video and a Book, Mu.ZEE, Ostend (2014); The Gathering Of Characters And Forms (Chapter I), Dash, Kortrijk, (2014); A Never Ending Story, Extra City Kunsthalle, Antwerp (2013).
Klaas Vanhee (1982, Mechelen, Belgium) currently lives and works in Ghent. A graduate of the city’s LUCA school of arts in the painting department, he recently completed the postgraduate residency programme at HISK – Higher Institute for Fine Arts, Ghent. Over the past several months he has exhibited at PHOEBUS Gallery, Rotterdam, De Garage, Mechelen, Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp, Galeria Silvestre, Tarragona, Z33, Hasselt, Musée Royal de l’Armée, Brussels and Rodolphe Janssen Gallery in Brussels.
Drawing is the core of his artistic practice. From within the drawing images, sentences, thoughts, video work, paintings, sculptures and even guitars arise. Often dealing with the power, definition and meaning of drawing itself. In general I live with the idea that drawing tells me how to look, to look better, and to see more.
Karel Verhoeven (1982, Gent, Belgium), lives and works in Gent. He gruduated as master in Visual Arts, media-art at the School Of Arts in Ghent, bachelor Performance and Media-studies at UGent and bachelor Graphic and Digital Design at Artevelde Hogeschool. He has been a resident artist at the Masereelcentrum in Kasterlee (BE, 2016), Isola Comacina (IT, 2015), M HKA (BE, 2015), Lanzarote (ESP, 2013).
Karel Verhoeven is mainly interested in the formal and social use of public and shared places. Project-wise, he adapts existing places in a playful, sculptural and architectural way. Next to that, he observes, analyses and reconstructs specific demarcated places. Like an archaeologist he is looking for hidden material: artefacts, sound and videomaterial.
This material becomes restructured and filtered resulting in a videowork, book, exhibition or performance.
His most recent solo exhibition and performances include: GRAVEN at the BANK Gallery, Topos Sonos with Emi Kodama and Elias Heuninck (premiere in June at Mu.ZEE), Unedited Architecture (Performatik Beursschouwburg, Campo), Föhn Le Fenêtre (Vooruit). Recently he created a commissioned permanent art integration at the Westerbegraafpark in Gent, currently he is busy with a permanent art integration project at De Lovie in Poperinge.
