Described by The Dancing Times as 'an adventurous choreographic voice', Joanna Young's work is delicate, intricately crafted and absorbing to watch. Her projects explore a variety of contexts and approaches. These include stage productions, site-specific installations, film, and community responsive work.
Joanna trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where she was awarded for her ‘outstanding achievement and progression in choreographic studies’ in 2006. She then went on to complete an apprenticeship with The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughsin 2007. She recently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Choreography at The Place, London Contemporary Dance School, with Distinction. She will be going back to complete her Masters at the Place in 2016.
In recent years Joanna has received funding from the Arts Council of Wales to develop and tour her own work. She has had numerous choreographic commissions, presenting her work at the Southbank Centre, The Place and in theatres and galleries across the UK. During the past three years Joanna has been mentored by Lea Anderson; Rosemary Lee; Sue MacLennan; Philippe Riera of Superamas.
Joanna is gaining increasing recognition for her choreography and detailed artistic process. From her base in Wales she will be developing and producing work throughout 2015/16 with a number of UK partners, and continuing collaborations with internationally recognized dance, sound and visual artists.
