Yumi Osanai

Bio

Yumi Osanai (1983, Japan) is a choreographer and dancer. After finishing her studies in the Ochanomizu University (Dance and Dance Education Course/ Tokyo, Japan), she joined several dance companies in Japan and in foreign countries. Since 2008, she choreographs her own pieces and has received several prizes. Yumi has received a grant from POLA ARTS FOUNDATION to do a research ‘fieldworks’ in Brussels, Belgium during 2015-2016: by trying to let the spectators realize their own structure of thought and the concepts behind it, they become susceptible to the hidden realities/identities in their daily life. Yumi researches the possibilities of this susceptibility by exploring the boundaries of the space, the importance of the distance between performers, the audience and passersby. From this research the experimental performance Hidden Sense (2016) was created.

Yumi is currently working with Virginie Moly, a french multidisciplinary artist. The first time Yumi saw the sculptural textile pieces of Virginie an idea sprouted in her mind: What if a performance was made regarding the transition from the abstract image into movement?
