DARLING
IGOR SHYSHKO & MOYA MICHAEL

The work we propose takes as its inception point the timeline of life – rather our particular lives/stories begun as they were from different locations on the world map. The discussion has evolved naturally over years as we both began our lives in countries not only extremely far from one another, but also extremely volatile – Igor growing up in the wake of the Chernobyl fallout in Belarus and Moya in the political turmoil that was (and largely still is) apartheid ruled South Africa. This is not to say the work is the story of these experiences, nor necessarily a politically motivated projection, but these/our stories, are where we would like to begin our process in the studio – to work toward making movement based work that is personal and world relative but not sermon like in its presentation.
The aim is to make a work that begins here and funnels inward – to locate here and now in Belgium – aware of history but distilling into movement and image via our accumulation of histories. A work (largely movement based), beginning in the macro world and finding a personal and unified story. Perhaps in the end what we are interested in is the act of living and being in the world as we also dance in the world.
So then we begin with two world identities meeting, merging and bleeding. We see that we are thrown together and that life is (largely) a process of unexpected events - time slips and slides and we ask where do we belong? Where are we from? What are the things that have happened? What is my story and what is yours? How does all of this find movement and voice that is a response to all this collecting? And because processes of making work are occurring at the same time as life in the outside world, we really don’t know what the story will become and remain open to what it could become. Like a kaleidoscope that spreads its many colours out, huge political climates travel and then pinpoint inward to land in just two bodies in space. And in the end of our time we arrive at the pith – at what is most essential to say and move out because of the processing of our timelines. There will be a NEW story and this will be the work.
