Halla Ólafsdóttir and John Moström are remaking the ballet “Giselle” with Elizabeth Ward (US) as a guest star. Their interpretation of “Giselle” is hemmed by darkness and has an almost apocalyptic wildness where we witness the unravelling and morphing of various characters from the world of ballet. We are confronted with the hierarchies within the language of ballet: it’s technique and pantomime, the distortion of the narrative through score making, the blurring of the roles between male and female. It is a sort of a horrific dream odyssey through the world of ballet, where there is too much of everything.



 

Credits

Halla Ólafsdóttir is based in Sweden working as dancer and choreographer . She participated in the master program in choreography at DOCH. For the past two years Halla has been part of mychoreography and INPEX, creating and performing a number of pieces which have toured to festivals in Sweden, England, Belgium, France, Germany and the United States. Halla is one of the co-founders of the Icelandic company Samsuðan & co which has been producing perfomances locally and internationally since 2005. In 2010 she has been touring her piece It´s definitely the spiritual thing in Sweden and Europe and performing in Dorte Olesen´s piece "Impure Thoughts". She was a part of INPEX editorial team for the production and making of the book The Swedish Dance History at the ImPulsTanz festival 2010. She recently worked as a choreographer and dancer with Dorte Olesen Production for the piece The Bad The Good The Ugly.

John Moström works as a performer/choreographer and as an architect. He is educated at the Royal Swedish Ballet school and KTH. He has worked with several dance companies and choreographers in Sweden and Europe. As an architect he has worked at an architectural office and with various installations, that all in one way or another deal with new ways of thinking about materiality and constructions.

Elizabeth Ward (b. Detroit 1977) wrestles with ballet and improvisation in much of her work. Her most recent solo "Your greatest mobility is your greatest stability" was shown at the Kinitiras Residency Center in Athens this spring. Previously her work has been presented in New York City through Movement Research at Judson Church, Danspace, AUNTS, Dixon Place, and the Chocolate Factory. In 2009 she collaborated with Swedish artists Mårten Spångberg and Emma Kim-Hagdahl on DARK shown in Stockholm at WELD and with Göteborg based artists Minna Kiper and Susanna Leibovici on WATERFALLS presented in Sweden at Atalante.
Her rock and roll ballet classes, fueled by electroclash, new wave, and punkrock favorites, have been presented at Danshogskolan, Stockholm; Tanzquartier, Vienna; Prisma Forum, Mexico City; Pa-f, St. Erme, France; Pieter Pasd, Los Angeles; Iceland Academy of Arts, Reykjavik; Lathos Kinisi, Athens; Danscentrum, Göteborg; Dance New Amsterdam, NYC; and classclassclass, NYC. In addition to this work with Halle and John, Elizabeth is currently working on a performance venture with Stockholm based artist Liv Strand to be presented in Athens this fall as part of the Drachma Project.
