L'OCEANPRINT THIS PAGE
Since some years, Clara Guémas intervenes as an artist/choreographer in prisons. She questions the place of the body in these isolated spaces, where it avoids, presents and represents itself in a particular way; like ‘being in the world while being excluded’.
She investigates the restrained and controlled life in prison; the presence and the gestures of the prisoners. Some of these people’s movements seem to be prevented to deploy, and some of their bodyparts don’t look present anymore.
There are moments of absence, but also a mechanism of resilience made on the surface. Thus the ‘unbound knots’, it are the openings that impose the gaze and the sensibility of the danser/choreographer Clara Guémas. They are at the origin of the choreographic vocabulary of her new creation called ‘L’Ocean’ .
NEW PIECE: L’OCEAN
For this project, and in the continuity of the research on the body in limited space, Clara Guémas focuses on school and prison environments, specifically on ‘la caserne du Petit Château’, a space in Brussels where migrants who’ve crossed oceans are welcomed.
This work – still in progress and divided in two parts – is created in collaboration with teenagers and adolescents.
During their residency at théâtre Marni and at Ultima Vez, they questioned what it is to ‘be an adult’ by accepting their limits while playing (wink to Superwoman and Superman). The sharing of some specific realities experienced through their body thus opened unsuspected beauty; their experienced stories expressed a real poetry and simplicity.
This ‘invention’ of themselves leads naturally to explorations of relations with others and also leads to visible physically gestures, in their movements and their dynamics. This exploration ‘in society’, more dynamic and relational, form the second part of this choreographic piece: people who encounter, construct links, and continue to unravel knots to open corporal, relational and cultural spaces between themselves.
