In general terms, the English expression « sex symbol » means a star (idol) that has the potential to symbolise or represent a certain sexual ideal either feminine or masculine.
These “sex-symbols” are persons that are not necessarily beautiful or handsome but that possess some qualities that make them sexually attractive in a way or another.
Our particular interest in this notion of “sexe symbole” is to search for what it could mean if we took out the notion of sexual ideal that it is normally associated to.
The French denomination “sexe symbole” is an anglicism. We have chosen to use the French translation because we are interested in playing with the different meanings of the word “sexe” which referes in French to sexuality and also to the physical differences between male and female ( men and women), in other terms to a person’s genitals.
The project aims at dismantling the notion of “sexe symbole” by separating and dissecting the words “sexe” and “symbole”. What are the meanings of these words? How can we interpret them together by putting aside the notion of a sexual ideal? Trying to know what “sexe” means, is equivalent to asking ourselves: What is it the symbol of?
