Outline

You ain’t heard nothing yet (EDIT) explores the relationship between visual and acoustic perception through the application of film theory to performance. We will examine the differences and continuities in how film and live performance present scenes, display movement, create narrative, and evoke emotion. In particular this will focus on the creation and use of montage, cinematic soundscapes and foley art, exploring the acoustic potential of motion.

Cinematic production, and film consumption, necessarily entail acts of sensory manipulation and control. The audience willfully submits itself to a hegemonic synesthesia on the part of the film maker.

In his book Audio-Vision, the composer and theorist Michel Chion writes of an “audio-visual contract” that takes place in the mind of the cinema viewer, wherein the senses “mutually influence each other…lending each other their respective properties by contamination and projection”.

In EDIT the audience will be asked to interrogate, and perhaps re-negotiate, this “audio-visual contract”. Throughout the piece both the audience, and the performers, will explore in detail how their senses operate and interact. Moments that are usually unconscious are brought into the light: how do our sound and vision really combine when we watch/experience an event unfold.
