In the research project Vantage Point, we combine dance, performance and video art to explore and question the conventions and rules of spacial perspective in the encounter of these respective media. In the juxtaposition of these media, and by looking for the convergence and the conflicts between them, we want to expose the process of looking at dance, performance and video art and how different layers of meaning can be created through these different perceptions.
Therefore, our starting point will be the ‘vantage point’, which is the position that allows the spectator a perfect or commanding view of that what is shown. In Vantage Point, we aim to systematically deconstruct and reconstruct the vantage point as a utopian single point of perfect illusion (trompe-l’oeil) through the different media, thereby problematizing linear perspective and reinstating the individual point of view. By proliferating the singular point of view through the movements and situations on stage and on the screen, we aim to throw the individual spectator back on his/her own resources, triggering a reflection about and awareness of the principles of looking at and interpreting different media.
What happens when the singular point of view is all you have?
 

Ariane Loze took part in the APT (Advanced performance training) in 2008-2009. During this year of research, she focused her work on the process of dismantling film editing and narration principles. She created a series of videos “MÔWN (Movies on my own)” in which the obstacles she chose make this research appear: she is the only one actress to perform all the characters and deals with the impossibility to make them figure at the same time in one frame. Through the editing, the illusion of the two presences can be created and it appeals to the spectator’s ability to use his imagination and create fiction.The filming of these videos has been made public as a on going performance at Palais des Beaux-Arts (Center for fine Arts, Brussels) from 2 to 5 of September 2009, at Tanzhaus Düsseldorf on 12th October, and will be on 25th of November at Vooruit in Ghent.

Elisa Yvelin has developed during her studies at PARTS a research on visual effects, perspective and spatial games throughout her different works. Her duet with Stav Yeni, “In circumstances” realized during their second year at PARTS has been presented in various venues and festivals for the past two years (Monty, Antwerpen, Springdance, Utrecht, La Monnaie, Brussels, Bronx theater, Brussels). In this piece, the visuals effects were giving the rules for the creation of a dance material that would make of the two bodies a singular machine-like one. Elisa’s graduation piece will be presented in the spring and deals with similar issues and brings them further in terms of dramaturgy and implications.

Jeroen Coppens (°1986) graduated as a bachelor in Philosophy in 2007 and finished his master in Theatre- and Film Studies in 2008 at the University of Antwerp. In 2009, he completed his studies at the Free University of Berlin, where theatre, dance as well as performance were his main points. At that time, he also collaborated on the international performing arts festival IN TRANSIT09 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. Since september 2009, Jeroen works as a doctoral assistant at the Department of Theatre, Performance and Media Studies at Ghent University. His current research concerns contemporary scopic regimes, concentrating particularly on the baroque mobilized vision in present-day theatre. As a freelance dramaturge, Jeroen collaborates with video/performance artist Ariane Loze.

Thibault Lac studied architecture at Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et de Paysage de Bordeaux before completing the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios program in Brussels from 2006 to 2010. Alongside his studies, he performed with the professional cast of "The Show Must Go On" by Jérôme Bel in 2009, and assisted Tino Sehgal on preparations for his 2010 exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Next to performing "Little Perceptions" by Noé Soulier, he is now taking part in new creations by Eleanor Bauer, Daniel Linehan, and Trajal Harrell, and will participate in Ariane Loze and Elisa Yvelin's new piece : "Vantage Point".
