THE IMPOSSIBLE MOVEMENT SERIES #1
Andrea Maurer + Thomas Brandstätter / studio 5

At the working title platform #02, a video shows the results of the workshop that took place in May 2011 at the Brigittines.

With "The Impossible Movement Series“
Andrea Maurer & Thomas Brandstätter specifically focus on the method of stop-motion in the context of choreography. The initial point of this work is to examine the notion of illusion and different modes of representation of movement. The practice of stop-motion serves not only as a technique for making animation films but also as an analytical tool for movement and the perception of movement and time. In this context they deal and experiment with questions of illusion and irritation and with the gap between reality and perception, which is usually hidden behind our reading-conventions.

A workshop on stop-motion

Since 2007 Andrea Maurer and Thomas Brandstätter have produced work that specifically focuses on methods of sequential art; besides performances, installations, sight-specific works and video-works, they have produced a great number of stop-motion clips. In the context of their residency at workspacebrussels and their current project “The Impossible Movement Series” they held a 4 days workshop on stop- motion in May 2011 at the Brigittines.

Applying the method of stop-motion as an analytical tool on the perception of movement, the passing of time and, in consequence, of choreography, they deal with matters of illusion, irritation and thus the gap between perception and reality that is usually hidden behind our "reading"-conventions.
