The installation performance Autonomous Scenography is based on the fascination of visual artist Meryem Bayram for pop-up books. She developed a series of pure and basic forms made from cardboard that can be unfolded from an apparently empty and flat surface to a whole repertory of evocative scenic elements. Once the scenographic elements were defined, different artists were invited to let loose their imagination on the material. The project demonstrates what could happen when scenography does not emerge from a story or choreography, but where it is used as the starting point for them to unfold. How can the performance artists, sound and light designers contaminate these various scenic elements? In a sensitive yet resonant game of forms and shapes, where spaces, objects and worlds are constructed, Autonomous Scenography reveals to what extent our perception of reality is determined by personal associations.
