Bio

Elli Vassalou (b. 1983 Greece) is a Brussels-based transdisciplinary artist, architect, activist, and researcher. She has studied Architecture and Urbanism [M.Arch.] at the PatrasSchool of Architecture – GR and Visual Arts [M.A.], at the Autonomous design department,KASK School of Arts, Ghent – BE. She designs and contributes to co-creation platforms, actions, and socially engaged projects focusing on public space, collective memory, feminist/decolonial pedagogies, fair practices and the commons.

She works hybridicly with film-making, photography, movement, sound, discursive and multi-sensorial tools, text, context-specific and archival art. She is seeking new ways of polyphonic narrating, assembling bodies, spaces, and objects in a critical and creative dialogue. Her work has been supported and shared by various institutions, community centres and schools in Belgium, Greece, Germany, France, Cyprus, England, Spain and theNetherlands.

She is a co-founding member of The Post Collective (2018-present), an autonomous platform of co-creation, co-learning, cultural activism and commoning, designed by and for artists with limited access to human and artistic rights. Generative modes of dialogue and storytelling form the basis to their speculative and experiential approach to film, sound poetry, teaching, writing, performing and supporting. She is also active in the collaborative projects Metaspora, the Post Film collective and Parallel Perceptions. She is currently working at Globe Aroma art house, coordinating the Visual Arts atelier and Espace Fxmme.

She has been co-developing the research of Surplus Cinema, a gathering of artists, writers and thinkers from Greece and its diasporas, working at the intersection of performance, filmmaking, collective action-based research and cultural activism.
