Bio

Liza Baliasnaja (°1994, LT) is a Brussels based artist. In 2016, she completed the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (P.A.R.T.S) program and soon after began studying Philosophy at the University of KU Leuven. Liza positions herself in the field of dance through multiple roles- choreographing, performing, and teaching (among others).

In her practice, Liza looks at how philosophical concepts can be developed and questioned through artistic research. Her works often embody an interest in thinking choreography beyond the body, integrating language, voice, and digital image in her latest performances Trieb (2021), Commensurate to be with (2019) and Figures (2018). She is currently working on a project L’Inconnu, a collaboration with Christine De Smedt and Theo Livesey which examines how low-intensity violence permeates contemporary social life.

As a performer, Liza has had significant experiences collaborating with Eszter Salamon, DD Dorvillier, Ula Sickle, Mårten Spångberg and Lenio Kaklea. She also worked as an artistic assistant in helping to develop the works of Eszter Salamon, Christine de Smedt, Myriam Van Imschoot, and Cassiel Gaube.

Liza is active as a pedagogue in the dance department of Lithuanian National Academy of Music and Theater. She has taught at Institut Supérieur des Arts et Chorégraphies (ISAC) and mentored student works at P.A.R.T.S. Since 2021 Liza is a co-curator and mentor at ‘BITES’, a Vilnius based platform dedicated to artistic research in the field of dance.
