(Alternative) Icons

Within this research, Anne-Lene Nöldner and Raphael Malfliet want to map out the characteristics of artistic and social icons and idolatry. They will reflect on their change of significance over time, examine their ability to evoke worship as wellas their undeniable ties to corporate marketing strategies in the creation of their persona.

The duo will look into their own (pop-cultural) icons and map out where their fascination for those in particular comes from. They aim towards a discussion which allows both, the recognition of the outdatedness of individualized iconic leading figures as well as a mourning about their loss. During the residency, they will be creating short exercise pieces around fandom and stardom, scrutinise memorial architecture and their spatial design of worship and pose collective leadership and participatory set-ups as a possible alternative to shift focus away from idealised individuals towards a network of contexts and people within which something admirable and hopeful is produced.
