//.between_lines: Research on Creating Under Constraint
//.between_lines is an artistic research project exploring how creativity survives under suppression. Chun Shing Au & Carmen Lee believe that by listening closely to the past, they can find guidance for how to move forward today.
They are currently investigating how women artists and cultural practitioners in former Czechoslovakia developed inventive strategies under political repression. Through 10 in-depth artistic conversations with Czech women artists who worked before 1989 — within institutions, at home, and in underground scenes — they uncover hidden methods of making, subtle resistance, and quiet forms of survival.
What happens to art when it cannot speak openly? Where does performance live when there is no stage? How does creativity adapt when watched, limited, or silenced?
//.between_lines traces alternative artistic processes, informal spaces, coded languages, and the fragile yet powerful networks that sustains artistic life under censorship.
This research will unfold as a publication, a podcast, and an interdisciplinary performance — but above all, as an exchange: between generations, between contexts, between what was said and what remained between the lines.
