Like God in drag

Can artificial – and thus fake? – behaviour become authentic when one approaches it wholeheartedly? Is anything authentic? Could something be so fake that it ends up becoming completely authentic?

Alice Van der Wielen & Anna Heuer Hansen - A for Fake 16:9

When RuPaul, the famous drag queen, says “we are all born naked, the rest is drag”, she extends the idea of drag to all social behaviour. Drag is not only every single item we wear – be it a police uniform, a Chanel suit or a djellaba –, but also everything we do and every racial, political or social group we identify with. For RuPaul, “the real you” is not your own, personal identity, but “the energy force that created the entire universe”. We are one. We are God. And on earth, “we are like God in drag”.

Like God in drag (working title) is a performative installation by Anna Heuer Hansen and Alice Van der Wielen-Honinckx that comes from a desire to question the discernibility of what is authentic and what is not.
