Our Daily Death
New approaches to the art of mourning and mourning in art
On the one hand, there is a great deal of activity surrounding mourning – the so-called mourning (r)evolution – whilst on the other, many artists, often young and driven by their own experiences of loss, are creating works centred on death and loss. Yet these two worlds rarely come into contact with one another. As a curator, dramaturg and grief coach, Katleen Van Langendonck takes on the role of mediator and translator: she is organising 12 round-table discussions, spread over 12 months across 12 locations.
The project aims to bring together the interdisciplinary art world and the funeral and bereavement sector through interactive discussions and other formats centred on substantive themes. Additionally, it explores what might constitute a suitable curatorial concept to open up these diverse areas of expertise to society. The sensory experience takes centre stage: from reason to emotion, from the private to the collective.
Our Daily Death takes place in Flanders and Brussels, in collaboration with organisations from the bereavement and arts sectors.
During the residency, three round-table discussions will take place:
1. Mourning meal: on food, art and mourning
2. The relationship with the deceased and the role of the imaginary
3. The role of ‘live art’ in new collective commemorative rituals
During the residency, the activation of the Onument in Laeken will also be explored.
