Summer of Photography: Camera Lucida
Since 2015, the focus of visual artist Filip Berte’s work has shifted towards the image around newcomers in Europe.
In his previous project Un-Home / Moving Stones, he positioned a large stone in front of and inside centres for asylum seekers and refugees. The stone functioned as a camera obscura and thus created a critical moment of self-reflection in the face of these ‘in limbo’ realities.
With Camera Lucida, Berte takes a step further and builds a longer, personal bond with three young newcomers. At the heart of this story is their new and often schizophrenic ‘home’ experience. In a spatial triptych, their portrait emerges during a long process of drawing on lithographic stones.
