SUMMER COACHING PROGRAM: 1- 27 JULY 2014
For the third time, workspacebrussels organizes Summer Coaching residencies in collaboration with Rosas and Ultima Vez
Four international choreographers and collectives are invited to stay in Brussels for a 4 week residency. The residency is focused on meeting and exchange as well as coaching and mentoring. Together with the artists WSB defines a coaching trajectory and invites different experts to accompany the residents. The residency is concluded with a showing.
WSB noticed that next to their interest in artistic mentoring former participants were also curious to get to know more about production matters, subsidy systems and more in general how the Brussels artistic community is organized. In order to provide a framework where artists can exchange about these matters, WSB invited SPIN to conduct a workshop on self-organization as part of the Summer Coaching program.
SPIN-OFF WORKSHOP ON SELF-ORGANIZATION: 7-9 JULY 2014
People come together around a work of art in various forms, be it in a theatre, a museum, a cultural centre, or in public space. Artists most often come together in artistic creation. But they also meet in order to exchange, to organize themselves, to discuss, to think and to evaluate work together, or to act as a community.
We want to examine the circumstances in which artists unite, the conditions that are needed for this coming together and the various practices and organizations that spring from this.
Can artists develop collective practices that go beyond the pure artistic creation? Can organisational concerns be approached in an artistic way? What kind of organizational skills are needed in order to produce certain actions? What kind of action requires what kind of coming together?
During the WSB Summer Coaching program SPIN together with Heike Langsdorf will contemplate on these concerns artistically, philosophically and practically. They will invite a serious of guests from a wide range of experience, working with different models that create potential answers to the questions raised. They will set-up several work sessions in which the residents can engage through the different models that are proposed.
SPIN is an artist-run organisation supported and run by artists Hans Bryssinck, Kate McIntosh, Diederik Peeters and art worker Ingrid Vranken. SPIN tries to find sustainable ways to develop the artistic practice of the individual artist, creating a context for content-deepening and offering support in production. SPIN plays with the friction between the collectivity of the organisation and the autonomy of the artist.
SPIN-OFFs are collective projects that can take a variety of form: curatorial, discursive, research, public interventions, etc. Within these SPIN-OFFs we also search for a rich collaboration with artists outside of SPIN. For the Summer Residencies intervention we will be collaborating with Heike Langsdorf.
Heike Langsdorf is a Brussels based performance artist who has worked with several theatre makers. She is a member of the collective C&H since 2002 and since 2010 she is producing work under the name of Radical Hope. Langsdorf realised productions of diverse scale between 2000 and 2009 within f,r,o,g,s OS, a network of collaborations she initiated and coordinated as an ‘open’ project. In those different contexts her role varies from initiator, director, performer, coach and curator.

Feedback report on Summer Coaching 2013 by Igor Koruga & Ana Dubljevic
Through collaboration between organizations Workspace Brussels/Brussels and Uferstudios / Berlin, within the Life Long Burning network, we got opportunity to have an artistic residency. This one month long residency, organized within the Summer Coaching Programme and provided by Workspace Brussels took place at studios of P.A.R.T.S. and Rosas Studios, from July 15th until August 10th 2013.
As dance artists, we used this residency to work on our artistic project called (working title) Tell them about the dream. The project is initiated in 2013, though certain desires for the two of us to collaborate existed from before. It explores the usage of performing arts, focusing mostly on practices of contemporary dance and choreography, for public speaking in nowadays society. During our stay in Brussels, we used this residency as a phase for study research on projects’ topic and further articulation of our concrete goals, approaches and interests. The residency was used for:
− Researching for theoretical discourses and artistic practices on: public speaking in society, spectatorship in performing arts, participatory and interactive art, openness of art work/concept, social choreography etc;
− Exploration of different forms of public speaking and rhetoric such are i.e. Love Rhetoric, Political Rhetoric, Performing Arts Rhetoric;
− Exploration of actions and spaces around performing arts used for public speaking by an artist;
− Exercise of actions and protocols necessary to takeover public space by performance;
− Collaborative artistic practice in order to trace, analyze and apply principles of public speaking and appropriate them into performative materials.
− Sharing and practicing methodology called 'Articulation as an ultimate aphrodisiac' which centers on principle of gradual production of thoughts while speaking. Such production is based on the concept of not-knowing before speaking, but rather reflecting while speaking and listening. This methodology was created and used during our research process, as a basic communicational tool for production and exchange of knowledge. We perceive (an act of) speaking as an object on which we're appropriating choreographic tool of improvisation.
− Open rehearsals and exchange with spectators, guests, coachers, in order to practically observe the effectiveness of the traced and applied principles, and share tools, methodology, concepts ideas etc.
The outcome of this research process was a 10 minute long solo/miniature titled Practice what you pitch! This miniature was created through a hybrid form of pitch-performance. Pitching is an opportunity for artists and producers to make their ideas become a reality: the flash point from where tours are booked, commissions are dreamed up, residencies secured and relationships struck. Pitch-performance is a performing arts piece that is made, done and works as a pitch. Practice what you pitch! was officially presented within the closing event (Ausfern) of Tanz im August Festival, at the special pitching event organized for emerging artists, in Uferstudios in Berlin; and within the frame of public showings organized at P.A.R.T.S. studios and spaces of Ultima Vez.
The residency organized by Workspace Brussels was a truly inspiring period for both of us. At first, we experienced very good and strong team work and pleasant atmosphere designed by people of WSB. This was for us very encouraging to enter the artistic research and process. We felt supported and able to rely on a hosting team at any moment on professional or personal level. The residency included great conditions for work, big working studio, supportive stuff, daily meals etc – all provided in PARTS.
Special resource in our working process was organized weekly meetings with participants from other artistic projects and groups that were taking part of Summer Coaching Programme. Specific game formats and structures, proposed by Charlotte Vandevyver, enabled for all participants to get introduced to each other’s artistic backgrounds, interests, approaches, concerns and methodologies. This format enabled us to take part in knowledge exchange with other participants. At the same time, we used this exchange to reflect our own artistic process. Another strong input for our work was provided coaching/mentoring hours with Nicolas Y Galeazzi. During mentoring, Nicolas helped us to articulate some of the goals we’re aiming through the research and to as well narrow down the wide topic of project to the concrete interests. One of the outcomes from this work was development of the above mentioned methodology called ‘articulation as an ultimate aphrodisiac’. Finally, particular importance for our creative work came from productive feedback session, organized after public presentations. This session was moderated through the feedback model used on the DasArts MA studies. Such model was inspiring to consider as a possible hybrid format to test in our work in future, as a way to engage audience in public speaking sessions.
With no doubt we can say that experience from this residency was quite encouraging for development of the project. At the very moment, we’re inspired to organize and bring this project to the full realization in 2014. This is why we are thankful to Life Long Burning network, Uferstudios and Workspace Brussels for supporting us. We follow the idea to continue with these kinds of programs, since they seem to be very necessary.
