Karel VerhoevenPRINT THIS PAGE
Karel Verhoeven is mainly interested in the formal and social use of public and shared places. Project-wise, he adapts existing places in a playful, sculptural and architectural way.
This can result in a temporary or occasional integrated work, a cluster of situations or a performance. Next to that, he observes, analyses and reconstructs specific demarcated places. Like an archaeologist he is looking for hidden material: artefacts, sound and videomaterial. This material becomes restructured and filtered resulting in a videowork, book, exhibition or performance.
One of the main characters of his work is the hybrid form, shifting between disciplins. With his background in graphic media, gradually shifting into timebased media, spatial work and performances. His work is more defined by a certain esthetic and approach rather than a medium. Verhoeven has a strong affinity with texture, material, pure form and playful gestures. Often you recognize basis elements from both music and architecture: rhythm, composition and structure. His first artistic action, a performance and series of integrated works, called Föhn Le Fenêtre, was shown in 2008 during the festival 'The Game Is Up' in Vooruit. Since then he regularly exhibits, creates site-specific works, is involved with co-creative projects in Belgium and the rest of Europe and regurarly goes on residencies.
