Marialena Marouda was born 1982 in Athens Greece. She studied Philosophy and visual Arts at Columbia University in New York (BA) and continued her studies in the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen, Germany (MA) from which she graduated with distinction. Marialena works in the fields of performance, visual arts and contemporary dance as a maker, dramaturge and researcher.
Her first works dealt with walking as a social choreography. She developed stage pieces such as “Walking Exercises”, as well as urban interventions that focused on walking. Her last project in this framework, “Walking in the City: on the poetics of space”, a participative walk in the centre of Athens, was first shown during the 4. Athens Biennal, in November 2013. Since then it has been performed in Frankufrt/Main, Berlin and Buenos Aires. For her new project “Poetry Exercises”, Marialena investigates oral poetry as a subversive political practice.
During and following her studies Marialena has collaborated with the choreographers MAMAZA (Mandafounis, Mazliah, Zarhy), Martin Nachbar and Deufert und Plischke, a.o. As a freelancing dramaturge she works primarily in Belgium for the workspaces wp Zimmer in Antwerp and Workspacebrussels. In the Fall of 2014 Marialena Marouda will start her PhD research on „Performance and Friendship at the Age of Precarity“ at the Graduate Centre fort he Study of Culture at the University of Giessen with Prof. Dr. Bojana Kunst as her mentor.
