Sofia Caesar

Bio

Sofia Caesar (1989, Brazil) is an artist, researcher, and choreographer. Her work investigates the apparatuses that document the moving and speaking body. Her recent projects reconstruct the making of documents (such as interviews and archival films) and the power relations that enable their functioning. She works across installation, video, and performance, generating speculative works in attempts to emancipate or undermine the authority of the documentation apparatus. She creates strategies to make the potentials for agency visible within processes that bind subjectivities to language, representation and/or documentation. Caesar has worked with institutions such as A Tale of a Tub, Rotterdam, NL; L’Iselp, Brussels; Parco d’Arte Vivente, Turin; La Maudite, Paris; SFMOMA, San Francisco; Tomie Othake Institute, São Paulo; A Gentil Carioca, Oi Futuro, Parque Lage, Capacete, Rio de Janeiro; and others. Her work Worker leaves the factory (conditions of work) is part of the permanent collection of Parco d'Arte Vivente (Living Art Museum) in Turin, Italy.
