Moving Ballads

During this residency Femke Gyselinck collaborates with Bryana Fritz, Sue Yeon Youn & Hendrik Lasure on Moving Ballads.Taking the word ‘ballad’ literally: in etymological sense it’s a danced song, moving lyricism.

Femke Gyselinck - Moving Ballads 16:9

Originally a ballad was accompanied by the lute, they will replace the lute by synthesizers, played by the 4 performers. Hendrik Lasure, piano player and composer, will compose a ballad that musically feedbacks the rich but capricious oeuvre of Joni Mitchell. This ballad will be the starting point to work on the principle of variation. The fertile triangle between music, lyrics and movement is the point of focus in the work. The choreographical principles they will explore strive for a balance between organisation and physical individuality, between stylized movement and heedlessness. How can each performer give shape to the words of the ballad? How can their moving and singing bodies be expressive, but not be speaking in absolute terms. With the words of Joni Mitchell: “I’m fluid. You know. Everything I am I am not.”
