POETRY EXERCISESPRINT THIS PAGE
Poetry arises as a form of sung storytelling strongly connected to myth, ritual and magic. In the oral poetic traditions of ancient and indigenous cultures, language has the power to heal, it is one with the land and the forest and the animals. In this sense, oral poetry is the celebration of life and the process of reclaiming it; in poetry, language and desire are intertwined, language and the body become one.
As people who work in the field of performance art, we feel that poetry is increasingly, if gradually, disappearing from everyday experience. The everyday demands from us a form of English ‘Newspeak’, a broken language reduced to maximum functionality and self-promotion. Most of our work is essentially founded on our skills of communication, yet, paradoxically, this form of communication tends more to isolate us from, than to connect us to, the people with whom we live.
What chance does poetry, a form of expression which, instead of maximum clarity in the shortest amount of space-time, opens up to all the ambiguities of language, stand in this context?
