- SYDEN III
SYDEN IIIPRINT THIS PAGE
Syden is a series of projects developed by visual artist Hedvig Biong (NO), photographer Pablo Castilla (ES) and musician/ sound designer Niko Hafkenscheid (BE) on the paradox of tourism: the more appeal a certain area has, the more inhabitants it attracts, and the more the environment gets damaged. After photographing the strange impact of tourism in the South of Spain, the trio started interviewing dozens of tourists about the attraction of the exotic. Hundreds of pages of love declarations to sun, silence, friendliness and fresh food became the starting point of an book installation where quotes from the interviews are confronted with images from the region. In a second step, the interviews served as the base for a series of love songs that were performed by tourists during a performance in Burning Ice festival in Kaaitheater. In the third episode of the project, quotes from the interviews are printed on banners and confronted with the great and narrow streets of Brussels, a place of distopia that at times seems to be a breeding ground for sentiments between utopia and illusion.
