- UNDER INFLUENCE
UNDER INFLUENCEPRINT THIS PAGE
Under influence is an immersive cinematic and sound performance - it is a mutant project that uses immersive technologies in the context of live stage. It intersects the projection of a fiction feature film with darkness, shadowgraphy, a surround-sound design and a phantasmagorical music score. The project is situated between formats and mediums, it inhabits the space between what one sees and what one hears or feels, where the distinction between what is live action or mediated can no longer be made.
The orchestration of all the sensory mediums, worked in different intensities and depth, explores dramaturgic lines that convey dreamlike, abstract but also realistic and narrative situations supported by the sensorial and imaginary perception of the audience.
In a broad sense, the live performance unfolds around a feature film portraying the mysterious and psychotic journey of an actress whose identity blurs in with the characters she embodies - the plot being the entry way into a kaleidoscopic experience of identity but also of theatre in the way of a visual, auditory and physical journey.
The movie actress Julia Gordon is hired to play the lead role of a motion picture titled Being Kate Winslet (which plot is based on the reenactment and encounter of several characters played by the British actress Kate Winslet). Being so devoted to her role as an actress, Julia Gordon starts to embody, in her personal life, the characters she plays in the film. In her psychosis, a series of soundscapes, musics and voices of films surrounds her and hunts her. Julia starts more frequently to hallucinate herself as the muted piano player Adawho follows daylong the hypnotic sound of church bells waiting for her love to come back. The film crew starts to get behind the clock for the shooting of the film as their lead actress has then, literally turned into her own shadow with a soundtrack.
Under influence is drawing from the creation of cinematic, theatrical, musical and sonic “objects” which wants to encompass an innovative experience of sensory theatre, cinema and performance by moving past the conventions associated with these mediums namely the bi-dimensionality of the projection screen, the primacy of vision over the other senses, the institutionalized buffer zone between the audience and stage. This project is rooted on a holistic approach to the physical presence of the audience, considering their multiple sensorial faculties as channels through which the piece communicates.
