the choreography of fear
For Z the image and the sound of the Zombie will be deconstructed. A Zombie is a dead human body that has risen from the dead. What makes the Zombie unique among monsters is thus that they once were humans whose “self” and personality has been completely obliterated and removed from the body. Anyone can potentially turn into a Zombie through contagion and thus continue to live on as an “empty body”, acting on instincts but void of consciousness, rationality or spirit. Zombies are also called “Undead” which illustrates their paradoxical essence, they are situated literally in-between life and death, in-between human and un-human, all of which makes them all the more terrifying. They lack several essential human capacities such as empathy, identification, emotions, mortality, physical fragility and survival-instincts. The mental functions of Zombies are also heavily crippled and if they posses a consciousness or not is arguable. All of the factors above are supposed to make us fear Zombies and they are all mirrored in how zombies behave, move, act, react, attack, eat, etc. “This choreography of fear” and what it produces is the focus of Z.
Sound in cinema affects the meaning of what we see, this is especially true for monsters in cinema, as fictional monsters do not in reality posses their own sounds, they need a fitting sound to match and extend their image. This will be experimented with in Z; how sounds can match, extend and solidify the image of the Zombies on-stage.
Z will result in 2 different productions;
Z1 will stage a “Zombie-parcours” in the house of Vooruit Kunstencentrum in Ghent, focusing on fear of “real” Zombies. This will take place on Dec 21st 2012.
Z2 will be a stage-piece, focusing on the movement and on the behavior of Zombies, in an abstract, non-narrative and deconstructed way, coupled to an extensive sound and musicdesign.
