Flowers (we are)
Flowers (we are) is a duet for three dancers and two musicians, with music by and inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The musical texture – executed on one piano by Matteo Fargion and his daughter Francesca Fargion – is formed by selections from the preludes of Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, transcriptions of Bach’s chorales for four hands, and new compositions. Three dancers – Emmi Väisänen, Claire Godsmark and Gorka Gurrutxaga – translate this inspiration into movement.
Flowers (we are) is Claire’s first collaboration with contemporary composer Matteo Fargion. Together, they search for a playful and creative approach to Bach. This is Claire’s third time working with the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke (after EVOL and HERO). His writings will be converted into poppy lyrics that clash with the Classical framework, in an irreverent homage to the Baroque master Bach.
‘Homage’ is the keyword here, not just in the sense of a tribute, but also as a gift, of the performers to each other and to the audience. Flowers (we are) is both intimate and generous, a loving ode and a search for the different possible relationships between diverse personalities and generations, between dancers and musicians, between dance and music.
