THE MARKET

Fernando Belfiore - THE MARKET 16:9

Movement study for THE MARKET is a performance that is part of a social sculptureseries of Fernando Belfiore that includes THE CAVE and THE FOUNTAIN. The movement study rests on at least two fundamental thoughts: Joseph Beuys's statement that art has the power to change social reality, through the lenses of the Brazilian perspective of Ecosocialism. How to embody ecosocialist ideas to dismantle inequalities, envisioning collective (trans)formations, and inspiring radical social change? And Judith Butler's (via Bourdieu) statement that “practices are not unilaterally determined by the habitus; they emerge at the site of conjuncture between the habitus and what Bourdieu will call specific social ‘fields’ where the ultimate or ultimately determining field is ‘the market’.”

The project investigates ideas on consumerism, the ‘ruling' of large corporations, and the accumulation of wealth and inequality, from the 2008 financial crisis to the current Covid-19. This dance practice wants to subvert with counts and amounts: almost half the world’s population — 3.4 billion people — still struggle to meet basic needs, 46 percent of the world’s population is living on less than $5.50 a day. While the racial and gender wealth gap continues to increase, the world's richest 1% own TWICE as much as the bottom 90%. Belfiore questions profit over lives in a pandemic capitalist world where wealth and health are exclusive. This work calls for structural change and the roll of creativity and imagination. We can celebrate our differences and envision commonalities, that are not sameness. THE MARKET is a dance, a queer narrative performance that is shaped by care and critical thinking practice and hopes transformations in the ways we currently produce, reproduce, and consume our material environment, and possible transformations from binary to plural or other modes beyond either/or.

The work performance work is in processual phase and research since 2020. The group has been invited to Spider Festival in Slovenia and Redplexus at Friche La Bella de Mai and it will premiere at Julidans in the summer 2022 with the collaboration with Isadora Tomasi, Maciej Sado, Rose Akras, Mavi Veloso, Nica Rosés among others.
