Luanda Casella

Luanda Casella (Brazil) is a Brazilian writer and performer who has lived and worked in Belgium since 2006. Her artistic practice focuses broadly on the ways individuals relate to narratives in order to create a sense of identity, to form their opinion of the world, and ultimately to protect themselves.

During her artistic training she specialized in storytelling and became a razor-sharp narrator of stories. She recently graduated from KASK School of Arts where she researched the role of literature in the development of critical thinking. Luanda has developed several monologues and storytelling performances. Her last solo Short of Lying premiered in TAZ in the summer of 2018, where she won the Sabam Jongtheaterschrijfprijs — from the jury's report: "In Short of Lying Luanda Casella dissects the lie as a narrative tool with a spoken word performance that balances between stand-up psychology, scientific TED talk and literary narrative. Through an ingeniously composed text about bluff, mystification and bullshit, she cleverly exposes mechanisms of deception”.

Luanda is currently touring with Short of Lying and preparing a new performance piece KillJoy, with support of workspacebrussels, NTGent, Vooruit and De Grote Post.

Luanda Casella (Brazilië) is een Braziliaanse schrijfster en performer die sinds 2006 in België woont en werkt. Haar artistieke praktijk richt zich in grote lijnen op de manier waarop individuen zich tot verhalen verhouden om een gevoel van identiteit te creëren, om hun mening over de wereld te vormen en uiteindelijk om zichzelf te beschermen.

Tijdens haar artistieke opleiding specialiseerde ze zich in storytelling en werd ze een vlijmscherpe verteller van verhalen. Onlangs studeerde ze af aan de KASK School of Arts waar ze onderzoek deed naar de rol van literatuur in de ontwikkeling van het kritisch denken. Luanda heeft verschillende monologen en storytelling performances ontwikkeld. Haar laatste solo Short of Lying ging in de zomer van 2018 in première op TAZ, waar ze de Sabam Jongtheaterschrijfprijs won - uit het juryrapport: "In Short of Lying ontleedt Luanda Casella de leugen als narratief instrument met een spoken word performance die balanceert tussen stand-up psychologie, wetenschappelijke TED talk en literaire vertelling. Door middel van een ingenieus gecomponeerde tekst over bluf, mystificatie en bullshit legt ze op een slimme manier de mechanismen van de misleiding bloot".

Luanda toert momenteel met Short of Lying en bereidt een nieuwe voorstelling, KillJoy, voor met ondersteuning van workspacebrussels, NTGent, Vooruit en De Grote Post.
