Rumiko Hagiwara

Bio

Rumiko Hagiwara (Japan) was born in Gunma and studied at the Tokyo Zokei University (2000-2004). She was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (2008-2009). She has had solo exhibitions and was part of group exhibitions at many venues in both Europe and Asia; amongst which are Cultuurcentrum Strombeek (BE), Hall14/ Center for Contemporary Art Leipzig (DE), CEAC-Chinese European Art center, Xiamen (CN), SFEAR FAN YNSET/Beetsterzwaag’s 1st Triennial (NL), Tokyo Wonder site (JP) and has been represented by Jeanine Hofland between 2010 and its closure in 2016.

The site-specific installation, photo and video works of Rumiko Hagiwara revolve around coincidental encounters within daily life situations that often emphasise factual errors or coincidental approvals between image and language. Hagiwara combines a western conceptualist approach (ready made objects) with influences from traditional Japanese culture (shadow, light, reflection), and aims at twisting the omnipresence of the unnoticed trace of human action and behaviour into subtle, and often humoresque poetics of the ordinary.
