Federico Protto
Bio
Federico Protto is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brussels with a Uruguayan-Italian background. His artistic practice spans performance, sound, installation, and research, blending diverse elements such as choreography, music, fashion, sculpture, and text. These practices intersect with Federico’s personal South American heritage, creating a rich, multilayered body of work.
Central to Federico's creative exploration is a deep interest in sharing narratives around migration, colonial history, and the ways we move through the world—both individually and collectively. His work merges myths, ancestral knowledge, and fiction, forming a hybrid network of materials, practices, and collaborations. Federico's aim is to contribute to innovative forms and tools, both tangible and intangible, that foster cross-continental kinship.
For example, his performance work Dress-Rehearsals (2022) functions as a proto-esoteric gathering, blending elements of performance, workshops, ritual, and installation. The piece collectively addresses questions of heritage by activating texts, songs, dances, languages, costumes, objects, paintings, and audiovisual works through playful, performative methods and games.
From 2020 to 2022, Federico participated in the post-graduate artistic research program at a.pass in Brussels. Prior to that, he graduated in 2017 with a degree in fashion design from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. His work has been showcased at numerous venues, including the Red Dawns Queer and Feminist Festival in Ljubljana (SL), the MOMU Fashion Museum in Antwerp (BE), Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers in the Paris region (FR), Centro Cultural de España in Montevideo (UY), ModaLisboa in Lisbon (PT), and De Kriekelaar cultural center in Brussels (BE).
