MAPA

We set out to invent a game.
Its rules, its roles, its goals, its treasures.
We also set out to create new worlds.
We do this by shifting and expanding our senses:
the tactile, the sonic, the movement, the invisible, the tissues.
We recalibrate our poles and fine-tune our antennae.
We also set out to transgress borders.
We do this by imagining our ancestors—their traditions, their folklore:
the Gauchos, the Tango, the Pericón, the inhabitants and landscapes of the Pampas.
We lean on them, repurpose their tools.
We raise flags, then throw them down a mountain.
As they land, we witness the birth of new islands.

MAPA is an artistic research project with multidisciplinary outcomes, including (lecture-)performances, text collections, and installations. The project explores migratory experiences and intra-colonial trajectories to generate knowledge and develop forms of relating. How can we be together? How can we activate empathy in a constant and inevitable state of being the "Other"?

We work with a set of practice-based movement scores and games. The relationship to textiles is intrinsic to the work, used as a tool to understand these trajectories and movements. Historically, the term "mapa" refers to textiles onto which maps were painted in military contexts. MAPA seeks to redefine their purpose. The "maps" created here are often unrecognizable, continually transforming and morphing, reflecting the complexity of diverse narratives woven along the trajectory—a constant negotiation between the personal and the political.
