Bio

Mary Szydłowska (PL) is an artist and choreographer based in Brussels. Their work focuses on the notions of the peripheral phenomena and ecologies of attention followed in the context of architectural spaces and institutional environments. In recent years they developed a diptych of solo works on the gestures of cleaning, in which reflection on the politics of labour meets an embodied research on cleanliness and dirt. SOAK and LEAKS were presented by Beursschouwburg, Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw and Brussels Gallery Weekend.

Following interest in affects and materiality as forms of knowledge production, they regularly create performances within specific exhibitions and in dialogue with visual artists. More recent projects include Ionic at IKOB museum and An Attempt at Transparency at Komplot, Brussels.

Currently their works take a collaborative turn, engaging in and co-creating strategies for togetherness (SKINFOLD with Abigail Aleksander and Cleaning Oracles with Federico Protto, Aleks Borys and Eimi Leggett).

They graduated from the Master programme at P.A.R.T.S., obtained a Master in culture studies at Jagiellonian University in Cracow and were a recipient of scholarships, such as Alternative Academy of Dance in Old Brewery / New Dance in Posnan, Research Academy at Arts University in Zurich, Cracow Artist Fellowship, SNDO intensive course and others.
