“The Blind Candle is an ongoing research questioning the notion of one’s identity when two worlds collide.”

Connected to Adela Maharani’s Indonesian root, The Blind Candle was originally inspired by the story and writings of Raden Adjeng Kartini. In view of the fact that as individuals, we are first shaped by the cultures in which we grow and develop; Adela Maharani reminisces about the home she grew up in and the strong memories associated to it. The embodied knowledge from ‘episodic’ memory fragments derived from Adela Maharani’s childhood experiences meets with the various emotional states that Raden Adjeng Kartini went through.

During the residency, Adela Maharani is interested to deepen her research using a batik cloth and some other chosen objects which are strongly linked with local traditions. These objects are vital to manifold potentials of the creation. At the core of it, The Blind Candle hopes to create space for people to come together and imagine collectively within our differences, by introducing a small aspect of a culture which to a certain extent could be both distinct and familiar.
