The Shadow Text
The Shadow Text will be a choreographic performance interested in activating feminist mythologies through sound, text and movement. Attempting a choreographic translation of Les Geurillieres a novel by Monique Wittig with re-mixed sound by Eliane Radigue an early electronic musician.
Monique Wittig and Eliane Radigue were both working in Paris during the same period, and yet never met one another. They worked in different avant-garde fields, Wittig within literature and theory, and Radigue in electronic music, we seek to bring their radical political worlds and work together. Through their work they reshape some of the very fundaments of what we think language and sound can do.
This project started with an interest to retranslate Les Geurillieres and stage the novel through choreography and within the theatre. Les Geurillieres is an epic novel that follows a group of women in a fight for a new feminist epistemology. They produce new rituals and symbols that centralize women in the production of cultural value. Wittig was a prominent french lesbian feminist whose writings were experiments in building worlds outside of hetero-patriarchal logics. Her writing develops worlds of touch, erotics, ritual and conversation. The relationships lived in her novels open spaces of intense affect, care, touch, and multiplicity.
