Anna Tierney
Bio
Anna Tierney (1999) (she/her) is a dancer and performer based between France and Belgium. She grew up in the south of France, where she trained in dance and theatre before studying modern literature. She later focused entirely on contemporary dance and graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2022.
During her studies in Antwerp, she met choreographer Florentina Holzinger and performed in her internationally touring piece A Divine Comedy. In the same year, Leïla Ka transmitted her solo Pode Ser to Tierney. The work continues to tour widely, and the two artists have since collaborated on several projects, including Bouffées and Maldonne, which was later adapted into a film for ArteTV.
In 2023, Tierney received a DanceWEB scholarship, enabling her to participate in the ImPulsTanz festival in Vienna. There, she took part in research labs with artists including Meg Stuart, Simone Aughterlony, and Isabel Lewis.
She is currently developing a solo to premiere in 2027, and is also working with Justine Berthillot, Zoë Demoustier, and Bettina Blanc Penther on new productions.
Dance and choreography form the core of her practice, but she also draws from contemporary literature and theatre. Her work blends genres and narrative modes, creating fragmented fictional universes that oscillate between fantasy and the hyperreal. She explores the body’s entanglement with social violence, addressing themes such as class-based oppression, desire, loneliness, and melancholia.
