Handle with Care

With Handle with Care, workspacebrussels highlights its programme line on art and care. This initiative offers a broader audience the opportunity to engage with artistic practices that explore or centre care and vulnerability.

During a curated afternoon on 27 April 2025, both the residencies that workspacebrussels organises in collaboration with KAOS and the long-term residency of De Ambulanten will be given a platform, complemented by interventions from other artists.

KAOS develops artistic projects with artists who may or may not have a psychological vulnerability. As part of this approach, KAOS hosts artist residencies within a psychiatric context. By bringing together art and psychiatry, KAOS aims to challenge stigma and foster dialogue around mental health.

De Ambulanten is a collective of artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, including Justine Maxelon, Rasa Alksnyte, and Ann Weckx, who focus on care and social engagement. The project emerged as a direct response to the COVID-19 crisis and its impact on both the care and arts sectors. Since June 2021, the artists have been working as volunteers at Sint Monika care home in Brussels, where they explore more holistic, bottom-up working practices that actively involve all participants.

Marie Umuhoza has been invited to shape the programme. She creates an environment in which encounters, conversations, and artistic interventions can emerge organically. Handle with Care is part of Open Studios, the annual moment when workspacebrussels invites a wider audience to discover the practices of various artists up close.
